The 'Spiritual Salt' Syndrome - Part 2
.... ". . . just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love . . ."
(Ephesians 1:4)
.... "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights!"
(Isaiah 42:1)
.... Once we've discerned the primary focus on Jesus, our own placement follows through abiding in Him, and often this will change our whole understanding. In this particular case, rather than being saved because we were chosen, we are chosen in Him because we were saved -- because He is one who was chosen. So Jesus Himself is the chief testimony; the point is entirely true of us also, but only in a secondary, dependent sense, as we abide in Him..... When we miss the intention of the ‘in Christ’ statements, we begin to leave Jesus out of our understanding. As our personal connection suffers, the inevitable result will be the ‘Spiritual Things’ Syndrome, which we discussed in our earlier postings: for if we don’t see the testimony of Jesus in the Scripture, we’ll end up viewing your walk with the Lord as a series of impersonal arrangements or provisions.
.... Now, where are those two 'syndromes' mentioned in the Scriptures? In fact, it was Jesus Himself who described them:
.... "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me."
(John 5:39)
.... The Jews regarded the promises of Scripture (such as eternal life) as ends in themselves, not as a relationship with God through their Messiah. So in the same passage Jesus went on to say of them: "But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life." (v 40). .... Likewise for ourselves, when we leave out the part about Jesus (the 'Spiritual Salt' Syndrome) we’ll end up with a very religious list of ‘programs’ and ‘provisions’ instead (the 'Spiritual Things' Syndrome). We’ll only see the promises instead of seeing the Lord Himself, who gives us life. But beloved, suffice it to say: .
.... "For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us."
(2 Corinthians 1:20)

Here are some of the promises of eternal life that the Jews saw in the Scriptures. Can you see Jesus in them?
"The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, according to all you desired of the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.' And the LORD said to me: 'What they have spoken is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.”
(Deut 18:15-19 )
He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces; the rebuke of His people he will take away from all the earth; for the LORD has spoken. And it will be said in that day: "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation."
(Isa 25:8-9 - compare John 20:28)
”Your dead shall live; together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.”
(Isa 26:19)

Loren, I'm just wondering whether a better term for this syndrome would be "Spiritual Pepper", to avoid confusion with the whole "You are the salt of the world" thing.
Just saying.
God bless!

Hi Gregory,
I'm open to suggestions. Let's see what everyone else thinks, and if they agree we can change it.

Good call.
I'm not trying to suggest an error here, though. Just, when I read the title, I was expecting something completely different. That's all.
